Couple Who Met At Introductory Class Has Not Rolled With Another Person In Seven Months
Jake Linden and Megan Dorsey met at the same Tuesday intro class, started dating by week three, and haven't trained with a single other person since September.
TAMPA, FL — Jake Linden, 28, and Megan Dorsey, 26, who met at a Tuesday night introductory class at Coastal Grappling Academy last September, have not rolled with another human being in seven months, sources at the gym confirmed this week.
The couple, who began dating approximately three weeks into their jiu-jitsu journey, have maintained an exclusive rolling partnership that multiple training partners describe as "uncomfortable to be near" and "like watching someone's parents fight at a restaurant."
"They call it a flow roll," said training partner Derek Coletti, a purple belt who has filed one of three formal requests to the front desk asking not to be placed adjacent to the couple during warm-ups. "It's not a flow roll. Last Thursday she had him in a body triangle and was saying 'I just think it's funny how you said you'd clean the kitchen and then didn't.' He tapped to the conversation, not the squeeze."
Head instructor Carlos Medina says he has attempted to separate the couple for positional drilling on multiple occasions, each time resulting in both partners independently approaching him after class to ask if everything was okay between him and his wife.

"I told Jake, 'Hey man, rotate partners, it's good for your development,' and he looked at me like I'd asked him to move out," Medina said. "Then Megan pulled me aside and said, 'Coach, if you and your wife are going through something, just know we're here for you.' My wife and I are fine. I just wanted them to drill with other people."
According to the academy's sign-in records, both Linden and Dorsey attend every class together, arrive in the same car, stretch in the same corner of the mat, and have never once participated in a round robin. On the rare occasion a visiting student unknowingly sits between them during the lineup, both reportedly stare straight ahead until the person moves.
"I made the mistake of asking Megan to drill once," said white belt Priya Sandoval. "Jake didn't say anything. He just stood there holding an upa rep with no partner, looking at the ceiling. I have never felt so much guilt from a shrimp drill."
The couple's guard passing, while technically limited to a single training partner's body dimensions, has developed what Medina reluctantly calls "an unsettling level of specificity."
"Jake can pass Megan's guard in under four seconds," Medina said. "Anyone else's guard? No idea. He's never tried. She sweeps him from half guard every single time, but only when she's winning the argument. When she's losing, she goes full dead fish. I've seen him try to pass for three minutes while she just lies there whispering 'I'm fine.'"
At press time, the couple had announced they were taking a "break" from training, which three separate sources confirmed meant they were fighting about whose gi was in the washing machine.
